1. Get your cosmetology licenses
You’ll need a license to practice cosmetology as well as a license to practice out of a mobile shop.
2. Apply for your business licenses
You’ll need both a City of Seattle Business License and Washington State Business License.
3. Register your business
File your business with the Secretary of State of Washington.
4. Open a business bank account
Keep your personal and business income and expenses separate by opening a business bank account. You’ll need the tax ID number from your Washington state business license.
5. Set up payment processing
We recommend Vagaro to manage your bookings along with allowing your clientele to pay by debit / credit cards.
6. Protect your business
As a cosmetologist renting a space, you are required to have liability insurance. We recommend Hands On Trade Association for insurance questions and solutions.

Do I need a bank account?
Yes! As an independent contractor practicing cosmetology, you are required to keep track of your business income and expenses in order to accurately file your tax returns with the IRS. The best way to do that is to set up a business bank account at your bank of choice.
